May/June 2012

At our February meeting, one of our members, Jo Wiecyznski, led us in making a jewelry pouch. We each had a square of ultra suede. Jo showed us how to cut the shape and various ways to embellish the pouch. It was a project that could be made at the meeting, without having to bring our sewing machine. At our March meeting, our members, Marie Putnam and Joyce Suplica, showed how to make a Pin less Flower Corsage. It is made from ruffles, gathered by machine. This is a perfect time to engage that "ruffler" that has been sitting in the drawer. Ruffles are being used a lot right now on clothing and in home decorations.

March/April 2012

For our December meeting, we joined Sew Much Fun and W.A.G. for a Holiday Lunch. It was held at the Boca Royale Country Club. The lunch was great and we had fun, relaxing together. In January, we had a change of plans, and switched to the February program; Judy Applestein demonstrated “pin-weaving”. The combinations of fibers that can be included in this technique are endless. The finished products make attractive accents to garments and accessories, such as pockets, collars, purses, etc.

January/February 2012

In October, our group went on a field trip to South County shops: Gloris's Stash, Charlotte Sewing Studio, and Quilts & More. Adding to the pleasure of shopping, we had lunch on Fisherman's Wharf. For our November meeting, we attended the Annual Meeting at the Holiday Inn by the Sarasota/Bradenton Airport. For the business side of the meeting, our new officers were installed, and for entertainment, we had a lovely lunch and Pam Crosby provided an inspiring trunk show.

November/December 2011

At the August meeting, Marie Gartley taught Ribbon Weaving. Members brought in various ribbons and yarns, and the NG provided the Solvy. After sewing ribbons and yarns in a criss-cross manner to the Solvy, the Solvy is washed away! The variety of scarves was endless! At the September meeting, Some of our members brought their finished scarves for Show & Tell at the September meeting. They were very beautiful and very different. We spent the rest of our September meeting brain-storming for projects for 2012.

September/October 2011

We discussed September, National Sewing Month, at our July meeting. Showcases are available at both the Fruitville and Gulf Gate Libraries. Members are to bring small to medium sized items to the August meeting for the displays. We will also showcase the 4-H program. We completed 138 turtles for the Hole-In-The-Wall Camp.

July/August 2011

Our Neighborhood Group meeting for May was held at EXPERT SEWING, the sewing machine shop near the intersection of Stickney Point Rd. and Tamiami Trail. The owners, Ron and Sheila Hodgson, gave us their classroom for our meeting and then our own Van Withey, who works at the shop, gave us two demonstrations. The first involved doing free-motion stitching . We got a chance to try it ourselves on machines that were set up for us. The second was a unique way of mitering corners. Expert Sewing, FYI, repairs all types of machines. They have an extensive display of sewing accessories and a very nice selection of fabrics. Ron and Sheila have another store in Port Charlotte.

May/June 2011

The first topic at our February meeting was the Regional Meeting that our Suncoast Chapter hosted at the Holiday Inn, Sarasota/Bradenton Airport. Some of our members described things that stood out for them. Alberta Kodydek spoke about the Mini-Expo. There were interesting exhibits by well-known presenters and designers. Of course, as a result, it was hard not to increase one’s stash. Narie Putnam described Emma Seabrook’s presentation, regarding sewing with knits, as really informative. About twenty of our Chapter members were in the Fashion Show Friday night. The main topic for the March meeting was a Sew and Tell. We were challenged to WEAR an outfit that we had made, current or “vintage”. I emphasize WEAR, because some of us found the challenge was getting into our “vintage” clothes. Compromises were accepted.

March/April 2011

We met at the Waldemere Firehouse Wednesday, January 26. It should be noted that this was the fourth Wednesday of the month. Our meeting day has been changed from the second Wednesday to the fourth Wednesday. After the business meeting, Cindy Johnson demonstrated a craft with which a lot of us were unfamiliar. It is called “Locker Hooking”. A base of canvas, a special needle (looks like a crochet hook with an eye at the opposite end from the hook), and strips of fabric are all you need to make rugs and wall hangings. You can also make handbags. De-signs can be random or planned. Cindy showed us a portfolio of her work. The samples are really beautiful. Cindy teaches this technique at Sew Worth It.

NEW MEETING DAY!

Our October meeting was a review for most of us: Delores showed us hand stitching. Lot’s of us forgot lots of stitches. A good time was had by all.

In November, we sewed bags for the Regional Meeting. We all had a good time and felt very productive. Our December meeting was a Holiday Luncheon with the Venice and Englewood groups. All enjoyed Show and Tell. We will be having our meetings on the 4TH WEDNESDAY of the month, starting January 26, 2011. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS. This gives us the advantage of having a longer time for our meetings, if and when we need it.

November/December 2010

In August, Ruth Williamson from the Landings-Viking Sewing Center shared some new cool ideas and some new products to help in positioning either appliqués or pockets. She also showed us some fabulous new paint sticks to enhance our fabrics.

In September September, Elsie Mason showed us how to make a simple and stylish hat. We then practiced millinery stitches. I am sure that our group enjoyed it immensely.

Our July meeting was mostly a discussion of ideas for bettering our chapter. Judy Applestein showed us how to turn a pair of jeans into a skirt with very little work.

At our April meeting, Joyce Sargeant taught us how to make one of her beautiful purses. Everyone enjoyed doing it. Judy Applestein

At our meeting on May 12, we had a “Sew-In” with members from Sew What’s New and other groups in our chapter. We made many pillows and pillow cases as well as cool ties for the Troops.

Jo Wieczynski had been awarded a $100 Credit Card from Target to purchase organic cotton sheet sets to make the soldiers’ pillows and pillow cases and to purchase good quality pillows to fill the 8.5” x 11” pillows that we stuffed with fiberfill.  It was a fun time of sewing and visiting with friends. (News of the June 9th “Sew-In” in the next newsletter.) Thank you all for your help!

Hope to see you on July 3rd!

At our February meeting, Joyce Sargeant taught us how to make a purse out of men’s neckties. Good work! -Donna L.  At our meeting in March, we had a discussion and shared personal info regarding our materials and how they are stored.  I think everyone enjoyed it!

March/April 2010

At our January meeting, our members made and brought in “fidgit quilts”. These are small quilts with attachments such as buttons, tassels, ribbons, beads, zippers, etc. These are to be used by Alzheimer’s patients to help keep their hands busy and keep them occupied. We had a great variety of quilts. Eva Winter will be taking these to Sunnyside Nursing Home for their patients. Our group leader, Judy Applestein, was not present since she has an ill husband, but we had a great meeting.

In our October meeting, a presentation was given by Dolly Haerr. She shared with us many of the classes that she took at National (ASG National Conference). It was an excellent presentation.

In November, Delores Higgins shared with us her new love: Thread Weaving. One can create Jewelry which results in a spiral shaped object.! All the attendees had a good time!
